1000 Level Courses in the Department of Geological Sciences
1000 Level Courses that Fulfill the General Education Science Requirement of the College of Arts & Sciences
Have you ever wondered what early life was like on Earth? Are you interested in why ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ has its iconic Flatirons? Maybe you're curious about Earth's current and past climates?ÌýOr have you ever wondered what that weird looking rockÌýyou saw on a hike was? Whether you're thinking about a degree in the Earth Sciences or just trying to fulfill a general science credit, the newly offered suite of 1000 level courses in Geological Sciences has something for everyone. Contrary to popular belief, Geology is not only the study of rocks and minerals (although we definitely like rocks and minerals too!). Research and study in the Geological Sciences attempts to tackle one of the largest and most complex systems that we know: the Earth system. Using any combination of backgrounds in the STEM fieldsÌý(chemistry, physics, biology, math, etc.), Earth Scientists ask questions like, "How has the Earth's climate changed over time, and how can we use this to better understand our current climate?", "What role has the evolution of microbial life played in the development of Earth's atmosphere" , "Why are there mountains here, and for how long have these mountains been here?" , "Where are Earth's economic mineral resources located and how can we most efficiently extract them?". As you can imagine, the amount of questions that an Earth Scientist can seek to answer is endless. We hope that you leave these new courses with questions of your own and a newly formed passion for the Earth Sciences.
