CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� continues to be sustainability stalwarts, earning 2024 GameDay Football Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge honors from the National Wildlife Federation for CU's tremendous efforts to reduce and recycle waste generated during football games at Folsom Field. CU was the top university in the Per Capita Recycling category by achieving the highest generation of recyclables per capita, while finishing second in waste diversion percentage by capita.

During the 2024 football season, the CU Environmental Center’s dedicated student staff and volunteers hand-sorted 99,499 lbs of material that was diverted from landfills—the equivalent of 125 Ralphies—including 17,442 lbs of food waste and compostable service items, which were subsequently sent to the compost facility.

After the Buffs’ Family Weekend game against Cincinnati on Oct. 26, 14,725 lbs of bottles, cans and cardboard was separated and sent to recycling centers. Over the six home football games, students and volunteers worked a total of 1,827 hours to complete the painstaking work of sorting waste generated on game day by hand.

“This honor is hard-earned and illustrates the commitment of the ��Vlog�ƽ�� to sustainability,” said CU Athletics Senior Deputy Athletic Director Jason DePaepe. “My thanks to all of our incredibly dedicated students and volunteers who worked tirelessly, mostly overnight, to sort thousands of pounds of waste that otherwise would’ve ended up in area landfills.”

“The success of the Ralphie’s Green Stampede program is rooted in our partnership with all campus departments that contribute to game day sustainability efforts, including our vendors, Levy Restaurants, Eco-Products and A1 Organics,” said Angie Gilbert, zero waste program manager at CU’s Environmental Center. “We are truly proud of our ability to send clean, hand-sorted organics along with CMA-certified compostable products over the past two seasons. This pilot is to observe the potential to replicate this type of operation at future events.”

Sustainable Buffs

CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� is no stranger to earning GameDay Football Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge accolades. Last year, Colorado also earned the prize for Recycling Per Capita while finishing third in organics per capita. In 2022, CU won the Pac-12 Zero Waste Football Challenge for the third time (also winning in 2018 and 2019), and in 2021, Colorado earned the Innovation Award for the Pac-12 Zero Waste Football Challenge.

The GameDay Football Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge is a nationwide competition among colleges and universities to reduce and recycle the waste generated at home football games. As part of the Campus Race to Zero Waste program, GameDay Football challenges campuses nationwide to reduce the waste footprint of their home games and tailgating events through efforts including reduction of single-use plastics use, food waste recovery, use of reusable products, recycling, and more.

Colorado Athletics has long been a leader in game day sustainability efforts with the creation of Ralphie’s Green Stampede in 2008, the NCAA’s first Division 1 sustainability program, which is entering into its 18th year.

CU Athletics and the Environmental Center have received this year's GameDay Football Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge award in recognition of efforts to reduce and recycle waste generated during football games at Folsom Field.

The Division of Continuing Education at CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� is continuing its partnership with the Conference on World Affairs (CWA) to livestream conference sessions to audiences in ��Vlog�ƽ�� and beyond. As we celebrate another year of committed partnership, CWA is grateful to the Division of Continuing Education for its continued support of the conference's efforts to share CWA's important conversations on today's pressing issues with a worldwide audience.

This year's CWA week (April 8–10) will livestream all sessions via the CWA website. Livestreaming services are provided by Loclyz Media and the Conference on World Affairs.

Throughout its history the Division of Continuing Education has utilized innovative technologies to extend educational opportunities to students beyond the CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� campus.

“Continuing Education is thrilled to extend access to the Conference on World Affairs’ rich offerings through livestream capabilities. Our mission has always been to bring CU ��Vlog�ƽ��’s faculty, courses and research to a larger audience, and we are grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that mission in collaboration with the CWA,” said Ted Rockwell, assistant dean for marketing and communications, Division of Continuing Education.

The Division of Continuing Education has pioneered new technologies in service to education for over 100 years. It offers online and evening classes, non-credit programming, degree and certificate programs, K-12 science education outreach and intensive English programs to the campus community and beyond.

The division’s dedicated advising and enrollment teams are available to help individuals explore the possibilities, whether they want to return to school after a long break, pursue a personal or professional passion or need a flexible way to meet degree requirements.

The Sundance Institute announced today that the city of ��Vlog�ƽ�� has been selected to host the Sundance Film Festival starting in 2027.

The announcement follows a proposal submitted in June 2024 by the ��Vlog�ƽ�� Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit ��Vlog�ƽ��) with support from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), the Colorado Office of Film Television and Media, OEDIT‘s Business Funding & Incentives Division, Colorado Creative Industries, the Colorado Tourism Office and a regional coalition of partners, including the city of ��Vlog�ƽ��, the ��Vlog�ƽ�� Chamber, CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� and the Stanley Film Center.

“I’m beyond excited to welcome the Sundance Film Festival to Colorado starting in 2027,” said Gov. Jared Polis. “Powerful films tell our stories; who we were, who we are and who we aspire to be. Here in Colorado we also celebrate the arts and film industry as a key economic driver, job creator and important contributor to our thriving culture. Now, with the addition of the iconic Sundance Film Festival, we can expect even more jobs, a huge benefit for our small businesses including stores and restaurants, and to help the festival achieve even greater success.”

OEDIT expects the festival will have a significant and growing economic impact to Colorado’s economy. The 2024 festival contributed over $132 million to Utah’s economy while creating 1,730 jobs for Utah residents and $69.7 million in wages. Over 24,000 visitors came from out of state.

The festival will also offer new opportunities to students, faculty, and staff—particularly students and faculty in Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts. Exposure to the world-class filmmakers and actors that attend the Sundance Film Festival will inspire the next generation of artists.

“The ��Vlog�ƽ�� is thrilled to join the cast and crew bringing the legendary Sundance Film Festival to Colorado,” said CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� Chancellor Justin Schwartz. “We are excited for tens of thousands of festival guests to experience what we already know: ��Vlog�ƽ�� is an incredible place to immerse yourself in the arts, culture, nature and history that make life worth living. I’m delighted by the opportunities the festival will offer to our students, faculty, staff and extended community.”

The Sundance Institute has selected the city of ��Vlog�ƽ�� as the upcoming host of its well-known film festival, bringing with it enjoyment of the arts, new opportunities and economic benefits for Colorado communities.

The Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) is designed to identify, develop and support emerging faculty leaders as they prepare for advanced academic leadership roles. Each year, a cohort of 12–15 faculty members engage with campus leaders in focused discussions on key institutional issues while building essential leadership skills.

FLI hosts monthly meetings throughout the academic year, featuring conversations with university leaders and leadership development sessions. These gatherings provide firsthand insights into leadership experiences, career pathways and faculty-related concerns. Additionally, participants gain essential leadership skills and practical strategies through interactive workshops led by certified experts.

To complement the formal monthly meetings, cohort members are welcome to join informal gatherings to foster a sense of connectedness and camaraderie within the cohort.

Faculty members interested in participating should apply by April 28. Preference is given to associate professors and teaching associate professors, although all ranks are welcome to apply.

The Conference on World Affairs and the Center for Leadership will welcome Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and producer Cynthia Erivo to campus on the evening of April 7. A three-time Oscar nominee, Erivo will kick off an inspiring week of thought-provoking discussions on today’s top issues.

Tickets will be available beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 17, via Eventbrite.

Tickets are offered at no cost, with a limit of two per person. Students will need their student IDs to complete their order.

The event with Erivo will be held at 7 p.m. on April 7 at CU ��Vlog�ƽ��’s Macky Auditorium. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Spring break is just around the corner. Many campus services, including dining, bus transportation and residence hall front desk hours, will be reduced throughout spring break. Whether you live on or off campus, are staying in ��Vlog�ƽ�� or heading out of town, take a moment to review some reminders.

Before you leave

Leaving for the break? Here are some reminders and tips for students living on and off campus.

On-campus residents

All residence halls, including Bear Creek and Weber Hall, will remain open for any resident throughout spring break. Hall access doors will be locked and accessible by current residents only.

Reminders:

Make sure windows are closed and locked and blinds are closed.
Unplug electrical appliances (residence hall students only).
Clean your micro-fridge and set it to low (residence hall students only).
Remove all food and perishable items from the room.
Set your heaters on low.
Remove trash and recycling from the building.
Turn off your lights.
Make sure your room door is completely closed and locked.
Remember to pack all important documents or valuable items such as plane tickets, ID and passport, jewelry, medicines, etc.
Store any bikes in your room during breaks if space is available and it does not block exits.

Off-campus residents

Reminders:

Before you leave, check with your landlord or find someone willing to clear snow off your property. Snow must be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and any trash in your yard. If you’re gone for a longer period of time, consider having the Post Office hold your mail while you’re away.
Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Move expensive items such as laptops away from windows where they may be visible or bring them with you. Make sure your bike is securely locked or bring it inside if you can.
Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature, about 60 degrees, to prevent pipes from freezing.
Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.

Traveling to DIA

Did you know you can travel to the Denver International Airport (DIA) for free with your Buff OneCard? With one stop adjacent to CU ��Vlog�ƽ�� at 16th and Broadway, the SkyRide leaves hourly from ��Vlog�ƽ�� Station. Visit RTD’s SkyRide website for more details.

University closure

Campus will be closed on Friday, March 28, for a university holiday.

Campus Dining Services

On-campus dining options will be limited during spring break—view dining hours and closures.

Buff Pantry

The Buff Pantry will be closed March 24–31 and will reopen April 1. The Buff Pantry is located in the University Memorial Center (UMC) basement, 1B73, near the lower level of the CU Book Store.

Getting around campus

The Buff Bus will cease normal operations at 11 p.m. Friday, March 21. There will be no late-night service (11 p.m.–1 a.m.) March 20–22. No service will be offered March 22–29. Regular Buff Bus service resumes on Sunday, March 30, at 10 a.m. The Stampede route will run Monday–Thursday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., with limited service. Check the Transit app for schedules.

CU NightRide

CU NightRide will be open and operating this spring break to offer students a safe evening ride on campus and within ��Vlog�ƽ�� city limits. Spring break hours will be 8 p.m. to midnight March 21–27. NightRide will be closed March 28–29, and spring service hours will resume on March 30.

University Memorial Center

The UMC and The Connection will have an adjusted schedule with limited hours and closures. Check out the UMC website for operational schedules. The Alienware Buffalo Esports and Gaming Lounge will also be open with limited hours over spring break.

Rec Center

Review special spring break hours for the main Student Recreation Center and Williams Village Rec Center.

Health and Wellness Services

Health and Wellness Services departments will have adjusted hours over spring break.

Career Services

Career Services will offer virtual appointments March 24–27 and will be closed March 28. Please check Buff Portal Advising for appointment times, or chat online to schedule an appointment.

University Libraries

Norlin Library will be closed March 22–23 and March 28–30; it will be open March 24–27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All other libraries (as well as Ask A Librarian services) will be closed March 22–30 and will resume normal operations Monday, March 31.

Across CU Mentoring (ACUMent) program applications are now open, providing faculty with a new opportunity to engage in meaningful mentoring relationships that support career growth, well-being and professional success.

A shift to spring applications

ACUMent continues to evolve in response to faculty needs, and this year brings an important change: The call for applications is moving from the fall to the spring semester. This shift allows faculty more time to plan their participation and ensures new mentoring connections are in place ahead of the academic year.

Building connections across departments

A distinctive feature of ACUMent is its focus on interdepartmental connections. Unlike traditional mentoring structures that are often confined to a single academic unit, ACUMent fosters relationships across colleges and disciplines, broadening professional networks and creating opportunities for collaboration. Whether through one-on-one mentorship or peer circles centered around shared interests, ACUMent strengthens faculty support systems beyond departmental lines.

Program support

Leading the program this year is Michaele Ferguson, associate professor of political science, who serves as faculty fellow for ACUMent in the Office of Faculty Affairs. Ferguson is dedicated to ensuring mentors, mentees and peer circles receive the guidance and resources they need to make the most of their experience.
