Mathias Nordvig publishes new book: Volcanoes in Old Norse Mythology /gsll/2021/08/09/mathias-nordvig-publishes-new-book-volcanoes-old-norse-mythology Mathias Nordvig publishes new book: Volcanoes in Old Norse Mythology Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 08/09/2021 - 10:36 Categories: nordic Tags: nordic

Volcanoes in Old Norse Mythology details how Viking Age Icelanders, migrating from Scandinavia to a new and volcanically active environment, used Old Norse mythology to understand and negotiate the hazards of the island. These pre-Christian myths recorded in medieval Iceland expound an indigenous Icelandic theory on volcanism that revolves around the activities of supernatural beings, such as the fire-demon Surtr and the gods Odin and Thor. Before the Icelanders were introduced to Christianity and its teachings, they formulated an indigenous theory of volcanism on basis of their traditional mythology much like other indigenous peoples across the world.

Mathias Nordvig is an instructor at University of Colorado, Vlogƽ. He specializes in Nordic mythology and has published on the eco-humanities in Iceland and Scandinavia.

The Nordic program hosted a Lucia celebration on Dec. 12, 2018. Lucia is a popular holiday tradition in the Nordic countries, a festival of candles, music and holiday treats, calling for the return of light into the dark skies of the Nordic winter. SWEA Barnkör (Swedish Women’s Educational Association), a Vlogƽ choir of adults and young children, entertained the guests with a Lucia procession and Lucia songs.

Two-day Workshop on Language Proficiency with Walter Hopkins /gsll/2017/11/20/two-day-workshop-language-proficiency-walter-hopkins Two-day Workshop on Language Proficiency with Walter Hopkins Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/20/2017 - 09:45 Categories: nordic Tags: nordic

GSLL recently hosted a two-day workshop for CU language instructors on proficiency-oriented instruction and measures of language proficiency, organized by Merete Leonhardt-Lupa, GSLL Swedish instructor. Guest speaker was Walter Hopkins, Assistant Director of Language Instruction for Spanish in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University (MSU). He is also the co-host with professor Bill VanPatten of the popular “Tea with BVP”, a podcast that discusses linguistics and SLA topics. On the first workshop day, professor Hopkins carried out a classroom demonstration of methods and assessment techniques characteristic of the proficiency-oriented instruction at the MSU undergraduate Spanish department. On the second day, professor Hopkins explained how his department has redesigned their Spanish 101-202 courses, course goals, teaching and learning materials, and assessments to reflect their new and competitive language proficiency goals.

The workshop was made possible by a 2017-2018 CU UEDP Grant to Merete Leonhardt-Lupa, GSLL. The objective of the Language Proficiency project is to prepare students for success as foreign language speakers by examining and redesigning language proficiency goals and assessment methods to make them consistent with the most current standards in measuring language proficiency, and shaping the curriculum so that it supports the students in reaching the language proficiency goals.

The GSLL first annual Multilingual Fitness and Yoga class was held on Nov. 13 in the CU Rec Center. In honor of International Education Week, fitness instructors representing Sweden, Germany and Russia instructed the class in their native languages. The hard-working participants experienced the three Indo-European languages in a linguistically and physically engaging workout of warm-up exercises, interval training, martial arts movements and yoga. The instructors challenged the participants to follow their movements while listening to the distinct phonological system of each language. The fitness instructors were Caroline Åkesson (YMCA Louiseville), Rebecca Logevall (Tran's Martial Arts & Fitness Center), Annette Tånnander-Bank (RallySport Vlogƽ), Berit Jany (GSLL), and Polina Novikova-Kinney (The Russian Center). The event was hosted by Merete Leonhardt-Lupa, Berit Jany and Galina Siergiejczyk, language instructors at GSLL.

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative organized by the U.S. Departments of State and Education.  It serves as “an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide… [and promotes] programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.” For more information, see the International Education website.

Hackett Publishing Company has published its second book by Jackson Crawford. The Saga of the Volsungs, with The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok continues the project Crawford began in 2015 with the publication of his bestselling translation of The Poetic Edda, which renders the most important source of the myths of the Norse gods in accessible, contemporary English for general readers and undergraduate classes. The Saga of the Volsungs is the medieval Icelandic epic of the ill-fated romances, tragic murders, and larger-than-life wars of the heroes of the Volsung family. Its sequel, The Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok, was also written in the Middle Ages in Iceland, and continues the story with another two generations of legendary Viking chieftains connected by marriage to the Volsung family.
