REEES major, Elizabeth (Libby) Chen, was one of the two moderators for CU’s Distinguished Speakers Board event with chess grandmaster and political activist Garry Kasparov.  Garry Kasparov gave a talk on October 8, 2024 in Macky Auditorium to a crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members.  Kasparov fielded questions from the moderators on a wide range of questions, including growing up in Baku, U.S.S.R. (now Azerbaijan), the Russian invasion of Ukraine, being the world chess champion, and democracy.  At the beginning of the event, Kasparov complimented Libby Chen’s correct pronunciation of his last name and commented that it showed that she is studying Russian language. Libby Chen is thankful to her wonderful Russian professors, Elena Kostoglodova and Natalia Plagmann.

CU Russian Studies Changes its Name to Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies /gsll/2023/05/03/cu-russian-studies-changes-its-name-russian-east-european-and-eurasian-studies CU Russian Studies Changes its Name to Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 05/03/2023 - 13:20 Categories: russian Tags: russian

The Russian Program, Vlogƽ announces the official change of our program name, as well as our BA and MA degrees, to Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Our program acronym is now REEES (with three E’s). The four-letter course code for our culture courses taught in English will change to REES (with two E’s), while courses taught in Russian will stay with the RUSS course code. We introduced this change:

• in order to better recognize our geographical focus as broader than just Russia

• to acknowledge the concept of Russophone culture

• to demonstrate our commitment to decolonizing the curriculum at CU and nationally

• to show our deep commitment to principles of equity and inclusion

Professor Romanov Publishes New Book /gsll/2019/08/26/professor-romanov-publishes-new-book Professor Romanov Publishes New Book Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 08/26/2019 - 10:17 Categories: russian Tags: russian

Professor Artemi Romanov’s new book Спорт и Холодная Война, Том 1 (Sports and the Cold War, Volume 1), was published by Herzen University Press. The book examines the interrelationships of sports and politics during the Cold War in the 1950s and 1960s. Sport was an important symbol for both blocks in their ongoing ideological struggle. The book analyzes how Soviet and American governments not only regulated athletics, but also used sports as a means to advance their national interest in the international arena, which was reflected in many sporting events during the Cold War, particularly at the Olympic Games. Readers will learn how the USSR joined the Olympic movement in 1952 and ended American dominance in the world of sports, how the US State Department tried to win hearts and minds of peoples of Africa and South America by funding ‘good will’ tours of American athletes there, about uneasy athletic relations between the USSR and Peoples Republic of China, about the introduction of gender testing in sports caused by the Cold War rivalry, and many other things in the world of sport. Professor Romanov has mentioned that writing of the book took about four years and was largely inspired by his teaching a course on Sports and the Cold War which attracts more than 150 undergraduates each semester it is offered.
