Dean's List/Academic Honors

In recognition of high academic achievement, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education grants scholarly honors each term to students in the Program in Exploratory Studies.Ìý

Students achieving a grade point average of 3.600 or higher in any given term are recognized by a letter from the Vice Provost and receive a notation on their transcript. Honors are based on at least 12 credit hours of coursework completed for a letter grade at CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ.ÌýÌý

As each college/school/program have different honors protocol, once in a degree-granting program,Ìýstudents are encouraged to seek the academic honors that are recognized by each college at commencement.ÌýÌý

Late Drop Petition

Program in Exploratory Studies students may petition to late drop a class or classes after the last day to drop a class deadline (published by the Office of the Registrar forÌýfall and spring,Ìýsummer, andÌýspecial sessionÌýterms.) Please note, students can drop courses on their own through the first 10 weeks of the fall and spring semesters and through posted deadlines in the summer and special session terms.Ìý

Dropping a course after the posted drop deadline requires approval from the Dean’s Office, through the late drop petition process, including a well-stated, well-documented circumstance that warrants an exception to the posted drop deadline.Ìý

  • PES students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor prior to submitting a petition to ensure that a late drop is the best path forward and to discuss other available options and resources.
  • Submitted late drop petitions are reviewed by the Academic Appeals Committee, and students are notified of decisions at their colorado.edu email address.Ìý

Petitions will be accepted until 5 p.m. (MT) on the last day of classes for full session fall and spring classes, or by the withdrawal deadline for any or .

You will be asked to upload an essay with your petition, which should be detailed, specific, and well composed. You may wish to utilize theÌýWriting CenterÌýfor support in writing your essay.Ìý

Late Drop Petition

Incomplete Grade Form (for FYXP courses only)

An incomplete (I) grade indicates that the student did not complete the requirements for the class by the end of the grading period for that semester. Requests for incomplete grades must be initiated by the student and only when, for reasons beyond their control, the student is unable to complete the class requirements within the semester of enrollment. A substantial amount of work must have been satisfactorily completed before approval for such an incomplete grade grade is given. If an instructor grants a request for an incomplete, the instructor sets the conditions under which the cousework can be completed and the time limit for its completion. Incomplete grades, along with a last date of attendance (for financial aid purposes) must be submitted by the grading deadline of the term.

If the student does not complete the class requirements within one year from the end of the semester in which the incomplete was assigned, the I grade is converted to a failing (F) grade.

If an incomplete-graded class is retaken within one year of the end of the term on the ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ campus or through ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Continuing Education, the initial grade of I will not be removed from the transcript. Instead, both class attempts will be displayed on the transcript. Please seeÌý. If your most recent prior graded class is an incomplete, you are ineligible for grade replacement as the incomplete grade does not apply to completed hours nor the GPA.

Students who wish to submit an Incomplete 'I' grade agreement request to their instructor should complete and submit this Incomplete Grade Completion Agreement form.Ìý

Change of Major

Any incoming students, regardless of major, who have not yet started taking classes at CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ should request a major change through their First-Year CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Admissions Application or Transfer CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ Admissions Application.

If you are a Pre-Business (PREB) student who would like to switch out of the PREB program to the Program in Exploratory Studies, please fill out this change of major form.Ìý

Any current PES students who have identified a new major they wish to switch into (and are not PREB), should connect directly with the IUT advising in their desired college, school or program. It is not recommended that students switch into PES while completing the IUT requirements for their desired major but instead remain in their current program before switching directly into their desired college, school or program. View the Intra-University Transfer webpage for more information.

Credit Overload Petition

Students must be granted special permission to be enrolled in more than 21 credit hours during any fall or spring semester or more than 16 credit hours during any summer term. Students who wish to be enrolled above the credit hour limit should submit a request toÌýexploratorystudies@colorado.edu.Ìý

Students must be fully enrolled (not waitlisted) for the maximum number of credits when the request is submitted. The request should include a statement describing why they wish to enroll in more than 21 credit hours (or 16 during summer) and the specific course and section they are hoping to add.Ìý

Requests will be reviewed during the open enrollment period for the semester in question, which is typically the week prior to the first day of class.Ìý

Pass/Fail

If you're considering taking a class pass/fail, check with your advisor or department to determine whether the class could be applied toward your degree and ensure you don't exceed the maximum number of pass/fail credit hours allowed in a given semester. Rules vary by college, school and program.

Changes to or from pass/fail are not permitted after the tenth Friday of the semester or after the add/drop deadline of a special (e.g., summer) session. Students who have a question or concern about the grading status of their courses should consult with their advisor or email exploratorystudies@colorado.edu.

If you change your grading mode in a student-option class to pass/fail, you'll earn either a P/P+ (pass) or an F (fail) grade that will appear on your transcript. A grade of P+ will appear on your transcript if you earn a grade of C- or higher in a student-option pass/fail class. A grade of P will appear if you earn a D+, D or D-. P and P+ grades don't affect your GPA, but F grades do.

To learn more, view the CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ catalog's .

If you wish to change Pass/Fail to Graded, please email exploratorystudies@colorado.edu with your request. Requests for Graded to Pass/Fail will NOT be accepted.

Late Add Petition

Between the last day to add a class inÌýÌý(see theÌýAdd/Drop Calendar) and the last week of the semester, students need instructor and/or department permission (requirements vary by department) to add a class to their schedule.Ìý

Once they receive permission from the instructor, students should contact the department in which the course is offered.ÌýÌý

Late adds are typically only approved if the class has space available and the student has been attending class regularly.Ìý

Beginning the last week of the semester, students hoping to add a class retroactively must submit a request to exploratorystudies@colorado.edu.Ìý

Consecutive Withdrawals/Good ProgressÌý

Students in the Program in Exploratory Studies who withdraw from all of their registered courses two semesters in a row may have a hold placed on their account prohibiting them from further registration until they meet with their advisor to assess degree progress.Ìý
