Leslie Herod is a trailblazing political leader who, in 2016, became the first LGBTQ African American elected to the Colorado General Assembly. Representing House District 8 in Denver, she has been a powerful advocate for criminal justice reform, mental health initiatives, youth homelessness prevention, and civil rights protections. Herod has spearheaded significant legislation, including efforts to end cash bail for minor offenses, decriminalize drug possession, and ensure access to menstrual hygiene products in prisons.
Her achievements also include championing "Caring for Denver," a ballot initiative generating $35 million annually for mental health and substance abuse services. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in passing a comprehensive police accountability bill following nationwide calls for justice after George Floyd's murder. Herod serves as the Chair of the Appropriations Committee and the Colorado Black Democratic Legislative Caucus, reflecting her dedication to systemic change and community service.
