Congratulations to Elizabeth Deacon, winner of this year’s Mary E. V. McClanahan Graduate Essay Prize. Elizabeth is fourth-year PhD student working on Apuleius. She receives the $1500 prize for her essay “Diotima and Isis: The Platonic Model behind the Metamorphoses’ Eleventh Book”. She will present her essay as a public lecture on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 5PM in HUMN 150. Everyone is invited to what promises to be a fun and stimulating occasion, and the lecture will be followed by a celebratory reception. Many thanks once again to our friend Mary McClanahan, whose generosity makes the annual essay prize competition possible!

In an effort to recruit the most talented students, the ��Vlog�ƽ�� will fundamentally restructure the support for doctoral studies in its six literature PhD programs with the new Consortium of Doctoral Studies in Literatures and Cultures.

Students accepted into the consortium programs will be guaranteed five years of support, of which the first and fifth years offer cost-of-living stipends and are free of teaching obligations. In the intervening years they will teach a reduced load and receive a substantial stipend during their four summers on campus. Students also will be encouraged to choose mentors from outside their departments, emphasizing a more cross-disciplinary approach. In combination with advising in literature, they might seek advising in law, popular culture or media, for example. The consortium is also rethinking how the PhD in the humanities should be shaped in the coming decades. The Center for Humanities and the Arts received a coveted Next Generation PhD grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which brings 28 private and public universities together in an exchange of ideas and practices. In northern Greece on the afternoon of November 8, 1977, Manolis Andronikos opened an unlooted tomb, revealing spectacular grave goods. Soon, he announced he’d found not only the tombs of ancient Macedonian royalty, but the bones of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

A multinational museum tour was planned with a glossy, illustrated coffee-table book and a BBC Documentary. Yet cracks in the identification soon appeared, and scholars began asking:

Evil in Marcion's Conception of the "Old Testament" God'

Marcion was one of the most significant "heretics" of the second century C.E. as evidenced both by the number of church fathers that wrote against him and the amount that they wrote against him. Though there is widespread agreement that a fundamental element in Marcion's version of early Christianity was his distinguishing between the Father of Jesus Christ and the "Old Testament" or creator god, the precise nature of Marcion's dualism is disputed. This lecture revisits this dispute, both among Marcion's modern interpreters and in the ancient sources, with a particular view towards considering the role that evil played in Marcion's conception of the "Old Testament" God.
