Legally changing your name

For those living in the state of Colorado prior to attending CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ:

You must change your name in your county of residence. For many first-year students living in Colorado, this will be your permanent residence, most likely the home of your parent or guardian. For students who live off-campus, your ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ residence is sufficient to allow a name change in ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ County, as long as you have been living in the state for at least three months.

For those living outside of Colorado prior to attending CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ:

You must establish residency for three months and document that residency through a rental agreement, utility bills or a letter from the university on CU letterhead.

Read the current  regarding the name change process and fill out the forms. Visit  if you are having difficulty understanding the name change process. Their website also contains the forms you will need to fill out.

Legal sex and gender marker changes

Legally changing my gender

In Colorado, it is legal to change the gender marker on your Colorado driver’s license or identification card. Please visit the  on how to change your gender marker.

As of 2025, it is no longer possible to change your gender marker on your passport or social security card. We understand that this may cause gender mismatches between state identification and federal identification. Please take this into consideration when deciding whether to complete a state gender marker change. Please visit  to learn more.

Selective service and financial aid

The Registrar updates Selective Service for anyone eligible. You can either fill out a form in person, or you may fill out the form online on (near where the Late Drop requests are).

FTM-spectrum identifying and transitioning students are not required to register. If you entered CU ÌÇÐÄVlogÆƽâ°æ with your gender marker set to male, please contact the Office of the Registrar to present documentation and have your military status changed to exempt.

MTF-spectrum identifying and transitioning students are still required to register for Selective Service.

If you’re unclear of your status or need a status information letter from Selective Service that clarifies whether you are exempt from the registration requirement, see .
